Measuring Matters: QIOs in Action
Naomi Hauser, Laura Roy & friends
Thursday, August 3
1:15pm-2:45pm
This session will demonstrate the format, tools, resources and techniques used by nursing home providers embracing the change process initiated by the Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs).
Leaders from several Pennsylvania nursing homes will share their experiences and discuss how they are using measurement tools to accomplish their goals -- how they have moved toward empowerment, team process, and improved communication by building relationships. Attendees will be engaged in a collaborative approach to learning, one that demonstrates how the implementation of the processes, tools, and techniques utilized by the QIO and the participating facilities is evolving over time.
"Philadelphia Style" Culture Change
Kathie Brogan & Anna Marshalick
Friday, August 4
8:00am-9:30am
In 2006 we celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin. He was a printer, politician, civic leader, inventor and wise elder. He was also in his own way one of the founding fathers of culture change! This interactive workshop will begin with a brief exploration of the role Mr. Franklin played in the mid 1700s in improving the care of the sick and aged members of society. His writings and insights will then be applied to current challenges we all face in implementing the new culture. Attendees will learn and receive tools for replicating several “Philadelphia Style” culture change initiatives that showcase new approaches across a wide variety of settings.
Stages of Success: Measurement Works
Les Grant
Friday, August 4
11:00am-12:30pm
The experience of implementing person-directed practices in an organization can be significantly improved by a process of tracking progress in key areas. This hands on workshop will explore how the Culture Change Staging Tool can be used in concert with ongoing quality improvement processes to implement and sustain transformative innovations in person-directed care. Dr. Les Grant from the University of Minnesota and MyInnerView will share how leaders at all levels of the organization can use measurement tools to make culture change initiatives "stick."
Turning Artifacts into Evidence
Carmen Bowman & Mary Tellis-Nayak
Friday, August 4
11:00am-12:30pm
As Shien notes, in any culture an artifact is the physical evidence that can be readily seen by an observer: structures for living and working, objects for daily use, rituals and activities, and ways in which people interact. This session will feature a lively dialogue about the new Artifacts of Culture Change Tool, and how it can be used to introduce new ways of operating in organizations engaged in implementing the new culture. Attendees will also explore new standards for person-directed care and discuss how they can be woven into a transformational change process.
