I checked the excellent new blog of Bill Thomas this morning (Shahbazim) and he linked to Bard Lindeman's moving tribute to Elma Holder.
With Love in her Heart and a Blaze in her Soul

How do I tell you about Elma Holder? In my mind, she is a legend; a marvelous, under appreciated story and, most assuredly, a book waiting to be written. We begin then with a statement of definition:

No one, in or out of government, has done more for nursing home residents than Elma Holder who, with remarkable vision, founded the National Citizens Coalition for Nursing Home Reform (NCCNHR) 25 years ago. Congratulations, and happy birthday, my friend.

Please go read the whole tribute. It's wonderful. And as Bill notes, we all stand on her shoulders in this work to create a new culture of aging.
"We fully recognized that the workers' conditions reflected directly on the kind of care that was given."

True enough. Elma is a powerhouse and a visionary. I have learned so much from her skills and tenacity. I met her 20 some years ago at a Teaching Nursing Home meeting where she spoke, challenging the audience with questions, concerns and  a reality no one else addressed. I was hooked and went over to talk with her to see what she knew that I didn't. Needless to say, there was no end to what she knew about policy, politics and advocacy and a friendship began.  A few years later, at a national provider conference in Hawaii where Gloria Steinem was the keynote speaker, she discussed specific issues in LTC,acknowledged NCCNHR and  thanked Elma for bringing the issues to her attention.  After,I had an opportunity to speak with Elma and she shared that she had decided to leave some materials for Gloria (whom she did not know) along with a note about NCCNHR and her concerns at the hotel desk prior to her speech. I had learned yet another lesson from Elma about how to leverage situations by taking simple actions that create  powerful connections and bring light to important views and issues. A few years later,I used this when I was invited, along with others, to meet with Betty Friedan (the "founder of the modern women's rights movement" who recently died)when she came to Oregon to speak at a college graduation and do research  for her final book on aging. Before she came to Oregon, I sent her materials on what I considered to be some of the key issues. This meant we were able to start at a much more meaningful place in our discussion. I would never have thought to do this without having Elma as my once again role model for creating real change. What a woman! What an advocate!
